Indie Game: The Movie

1. What are some of the differences between "big games" and "independent games"?
"Big games" are often made by a company or a large group of people with a large budget. "Independent games" are usually by a much smaller group with less to work with, sometimes it's even just one person working on a game. Of course this affects the quality of the game since independent games are made with less people. They're also usually not as well known since they aren't advertised everywhere or physically sold in stores.

2. What are some of the difficulties the developers in the film have to overcome?
They have to overcome all the issues that come with making a game such as bugs, controls, etc; also their outside life which often does not stay together when they're working on a game for a long period of time. They're anxious about release, about feedback, some of them felt that having it released felt strange on its own.

3. What do you think is attractive about developing an indie game? What do you think you would like about working on an indie game? What do you think you might not like?
Making an indie game will probably give more credit to individual people since there are very few working on it. You could also design it however you want without having to follow anyone else's plan. I probably would not like the stress that comes with it and how it would become what I would work on for a long time. It would take a long time and it could separate me from more important things in life. If I made a game I would need to keep working on it until I am satisfied otherwise it will feel like a waste of time.

4. What is some advice you might have for someone trying to create their own game based on what you learned in the film?
To work on it in moderation and have confidence in your own work. A lot of the people had doubts but it all worked out okay because they kept fixing and working on it. I would say to take breaks when needed but there could be deadlines which would affect that too. Finding a way to relax once in awhile would be good though.

5. What is the best part of completing the creation of a game for the developers?
It would probably be finally finishing it and sending it off for others to experience. It seems like a huge weight that would be lifted. It'd be interesting to see all the reviews and reactions plus if it's successful there would be a good profit. The amount of effort put into it pays off in time.

Scratch Level 2 - Racing Game

Use arrow keys to move Sonic, use WASD to move Shadow. Try to stay on the track, they love going fast but not so much off-track.

Project page.

1. I had difficulties trying to make the two-player work, making the countdown work, and making the game playable after hitting the green. For the first issue I was the most stuck but a friend told me I just needed separate speeds for the characters. For the countdown I wasn't sure if there was already a countdown setting, which there wasn't, so I made my own and just added it to the screen like with the "finished" text. For the last part, when you hit the green it would keep spinning you which was an issue so I decided to just take it out. It isn't really needed and I like to keep my theme of GOING FAST all the time.

2. I made the starting background Green Hill Zone by adding an backdrop for 3 seconds and then switching to the green again because the code wouldn't really work on the Green Hill Zone. I also added Sonic/Shadow instead of cars easily by replacing the cars and adding these costumes. Finally I also added Sanic/Shedow costumes for them when they hit the green just cause it seems better that way. With that it was simple coding like "if touching colour green switch costumes".
